HMPA's CLE Webinar will be on July 9, 2024! Join us as we delve into the basics of Texas Workers' Compensation practice, including the purpose of workers' compensation insurance, the claims practices and types of benefits available.

Speaker: Stephen T. Smith 

Topic: "Introduction to Texas Workers' Compensation Act "The Basics.""



Stephen T. Smith received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Austin College in 1989. He subsequently attended the University of Houston Law School where he received his Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1992. During his tenure at the University of Houston, he served as Case Note and Comment Editor of the Houston Journal of International Law and published an article concerning the Oil Pollution Act of 1990.

Following his admission to the State Bar of Texas in 1992, Mr. Smith began his legal career with a well-established Houston, Texas law firm where he handled maritime and general insurance defense matters. Mr. Smith subsequently expanded his practice to include the representation of insurance carriers and employers before the United States Department of Labor, the Division of Workers’ Compensation and Texas Workforce Commission, as well as before the district and appellate courts in Texas and Oklahoma. In 1999, Mr. Smith began Smith & Carr, P.C.

Mr. Smith expanded the firm’s practice to include the handling of insurance, labor and employment, personal injury and professional liability matters. Mr. Smith maintains an active practice including Federal and State Workers’ Compensation matters, employment related tort claims, premises liability, gross negligence, wrongful death actions, professional liability, products liability and employment discharge matters.

Mr. Smith is licensed to practice law in the State of Texas and in the United States District Courts for the Southern, Eastern and Western Districts of Texas. Mr. Smith is a frequent lecturer at continuing education programs and seminars for insurance professionals and employers. Additionally, Mr. Smith was selected for inclusion in the 2013 Texas Super Lawyers list.
